Planning your Zanzibar escape but confused about when to go? We break down every month so you can pick the perfect time for your dream trip.
Zanzibar enjoys a tropical climate year-round, but choosing the right time to visit can make the difference between an extraordinary trip and a soggy one. Here's everything you need to know.
The Two Main Seasons
Zanzibar essentially has two seasons: the dry season (June–October and December–February) and the rainy season (March–May and November). The dry season is when most visitors come — for good reason.
June to October: The Golden Window
This is arguably the best time to visit. The weather is dry, the winds are mild, visibility underwater is exceptional (up to 30 metres), and the beaches are at their most inviting. Temperatures hover around 25–28°C — warm but not overwhelmingly hot.
This is peak season, so book your accommodation and tours well in advance, especially for July and August.
December to February: The Second Best Option
Short rains in November give way to a second beautiful dry period. December and January are excellent — fewer tourists than the summer peak, still wonderful weather, and this is whale shark season (October–February), one of the most magical wildlife experiences in East Africa.
March to May: The Long Rains
The long rainy season brings heavy afternoon downpours, humidity, and some beach closures. However, this is low season — prices drop dramatically, the island is lush and green, and you'll have many places to yourself. If budget is a priority and you don't mind occasional rain, March–May can be a hidden gem.
Our Recommendation
For first-time visitors: July or October. You'll get perfect weather, great diving conditions, and slightly fewer crowds than August's peak. For a more unique experience: January for whale shark season or April for those on a budget who want Zanzibar largely to themselves.
